Annual Leave (Vacation)

  • Employees enjoy a minimum of 18 days of paid annual vacation time (rising to 24 days for employees below 18 years old).
  • The allocation of additional leave days is determined by the tenure outlined in the employment pact and labor statutes.
  • The right to annual leave expands gradually in tandem with the length of service, as outlined in the contractual and statutory provisions.

Public Holidays

  • New Year's Day is observed on January 1st.
  • The day after New Year's Day falls on January 2nd.
  • National Heroes' Day is celebrated on February 1st.
  • Good Friday occurs on March 29th.
  • Easter Monday follows on April 1st.
  • Tutsi Genocide Memorial Day is commemorated on April 7th.
  • Eid al-Fitr is tentatively scheduled for April 10th.
  • Labor Day is observed on May 1st.
  • Eid al-Adha is tentatively slated for June 17th.
  • Independence Day falls on July 1st.
  • Liberation Day is celebrated on July 4th.
  • Umuganura Day occurs on August 2nd.
  • The Assumption of Mary is observed on August 15th.
  • Christmas Day is celebrated on December 25th.
  • Boxing Day follows on December 26th.

Sick Days

  • Employees in Rwanda have the option of taking sickness absence for a total of six months each year.
  • This period comprises three months of paid leave and three months of unpaid leave, necessitating proof of illness.
  • Throughout the paid sick leave duration, employees receive their standard salary.
  • Unpaid sick leave does not involve compensation.
  • The aggregate sick leave duration cannot surpass six months within a twelve-month period.

Maternity Leave

  • Women employees in Rwanda are granted a period of 12 weeks of compensated maternity leave.
  • This leave includes a minimum of 14 days preceding the expected due date.
  • Before beginning maternity leave, confirmation certificates verifying the pregnancy must be submitted.
  • During maternity leave, female employees receive their regular salaries.
  • The entitlement to maternity leave aims to support the health and well-being of expectant mothers.

Paternity Leave

  • In Rwanda, fathers are eligible for unpaid leave of a maximum of four working days within a single calendar year.
  • This leave allows fathers to attend to family responsibilities or support their partners during significant life events.
  • The leave is provided to encourage active participation of fathers in family matters.
  • It enables fathers to bond with their newborns or provide assistance during critical family situations.
  • The unpaid leave is part of the efforts to promote work-life balance and gender equality in Rwanda.

Parental Leave

The legal framework in Rwanda lacks regulations pertaining to parental leave entitlements.

Other Leave

The law does not include any regulations concerning alternative forms of leave.
